Summary[edit]

Description
English: Stele from Auch (Gers), 5th to 6th century AD. A mixed Latin/Hebrew inscription reads:

"IN DEI NOMINE S[an]CTO[o]/ PELE[?]ER QUI [h]IC BENNID/ D[eu]S ESTO CUM IPSO OCOLI/ INVIDIOSI CREPEN[t]. DED[i]T/ DONUM IONA FECET/ שָׁלוֹם"

The exact purpose of the stone is uncertain. It has been argued to have been a dedicated paving stone (pelester) of a synagogue offered by a certain Bennid. Another hypothesis is that it was the funeral stele of a certain Peleger, son of Nid. Collection of the Musée d'art et d'histoire du judaisme (Paris), D.2018.01.001.
