Summary[edit]
DescriptionMamshit. Flour mill in Mampsis (4123324928).jpg |
The view south from the watch-tower of ancient Mampsis (Mamshit). In the foreground is the flour mill installation across the street from the tower entrance. Behind that block of buildings and across the east-west street, the Byzantine-era "western church" is visible at the right-hand side of the next block of buildings. In the distance are visible the steep slopes of the rugged Negev country south of Mampsis. Although it is not immediately obvious from this photo, the town stands at the edge of a precipitous drop, so that steep slopes protected it around its southern end. It is only to the north that the land becomes flatter and there was easy access to the town. Hence the large gate complex was located on the town's northern edge. |
