Description
English: Despite the German title given to the work by the Albertina, Der Vater der Künstlerin in graugestreiftem Rock und roter Weste, which could be translated as The artist's father in a gray striped frock coat and red waistcoat, this miniature does not represent the father of the artist, who died in 1776 when she was only 15 years old. This erroneous identification stems from an inscription on the back: If he was the best / of the fathers, he was / also the most adored / His daughter Marie / Amelie 1816 / ... (Illegible). This inscription must have been left by the owner of the work in 1816, a certain Marie-Amélie. The sitter would therefore be Marie-Amélie's father.
Marie-Adélaïde Duvieux died in 1799.
