Summary[edit]
DescriptionMartha Washington's Statue (Main Cave, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, USA) 2 (38091136252).jpg |
Western Kentucky's Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system on Earth, with 412 miles known and mapped as of fall 2017. The name does not refer to the early discovery of fossil mastodon or mammoth bones here. Rather, the name refers to the immense size of many rooms and passages. Shown here is "Martha Washington's Statue", also known as "Martha Washington's Ghost". It's an illusion that was discovered long ago during early cave tours and is infrequently demonstrated in modern times. This is looking downstream in Main Cave, a giant canyon passage and the main trunk in Mammoth Cave Ridge. When a distant room is lit up, and the intervening stretch of passage is dark, the lateral sinuosity of the cave passage produces a relatively thin, irregular sliver of light shining through that somewhat resembles a human figure. Early tourists and tour guides perceived a likeness to Martha Washington, America's first First Lady. It looks more like a chess piece to me. Pareidolia in action! Early tour guides also referred to the image as George Washington, the Duke of Wellington, or Bismarck, depending on the nationality of the visiting tourists. Locality: Main Cave (between Giant's Coffin and the Gothic Avenue-Main Cave intersection), Mammoth Cave Ridge, Mammoth Cave National Park, western Kentucky, USA |
