| Description |
English: This photo of the Medici coat of arms was taken by a visitor of the Uffizi Gallery - in Florence, Italy - in June of 2018. Many versions of the Medici crest can be found throughout Florence, Italy, where the family rose to power centuries ago through their business, the Medici Bank. They were eventually established as the noble family of the duchy of Florence, and, through territory expansion, Tuscany as a whole. The family were important benefactors of the Uffizi Gallery and patrons of art in general. The Medici line produced many well-known historical figures, most notably a number of Popes of the Catholic Church and even a few monarchs, two of which were Queens of France. Their crest is quite famous, not only because of the family itself, but also because it is rather mysterious. Though many have speculated about the meaning of the red balls portrayed on the crest, it is unclear what they are actually supposed to represent, and the mystery continues to fascinate people to this day. |
