Summary[edit]

Description
English: Medieval settlement near Tytherington This view looking east is of pasture on chalk downland at a height of about 185m south of Tytherington Hill and of the village of Tytherington in the valley of the River Wylye. The bumpiness of the ground is evidence of the Medieval village of Tytherington that was situated here, and which is marked Ancient Village on the OS 1940s map. The earthworks extend to the hedgerow in the middle distance, and about 200m behind the camera into the next grid square, in all about 7 acres. Tytherington comes from the Anglo-Saxon meaning 'the tithing enclosure'. In the far distance beyond the first clump of trees and across a long dry chalk valley is Corton Down and to the right, the woods of Great Ridge.
