Dans ce cadre, on observe que les brins de laine indiquent un écoulement de la gauche vers la droite.
C'est normal puisque ces essais de stabilité de la capsule Mercury sont fait pour mesurer la stabilité en position de rentrée atmosphérique, c.-à-d. bouclier thermique vers l'avant.
Le bouclier thermique de la capsule Mercury est la calotte sphérique qui est situé à gauche de l'image.
Dans ce cadre on remarque aussi que les brins de laine indique un écoulement de gauche à droite.
Sur toute la surface de la capsule (à part son bouclier thermique qui est tout à fait à gauche) l'écoulement est inversé (il va globalement de la droite vers la gauche). Cela signifie que la calotte sphérique du bouclier thermique projette les particules d'air qui le frappent très à l'extérieur de la capsule.
Les brins de laine présents sur la capsules montrent donc un écoulement de retour, très tourbillonnaire.
Grâce à son bouclier thermique, la capsule Mercury se montre stable dans l'écoulement de cette soufflerie. Cette stabilité prouve que son Centre de pression aérodynamique est en arrière (en aval) de la barre autour de laquelle elle est équilibrée et articulée.
