Before the accident they had planned on competing in the Air Force marathon. Undaunted, Walter promised Jason that they are going to run together. Walter found out about a marathon at Park City, Utah, near where Jason now lives. "It's going to hurt," Boldish said, the day before the race. "But it's only one day of my life, I can live through the pain. It's pain Jason only wishes he could feel; he'd gladly take it plus a 100 times worse. I made him a promise, and I know if roles were reversed, he'd have already pushed me in a couple of marathons by now. And that's God's honest truth. He would've thrown me over his shoulder and carried me the whole way if he had to." In the end, Shumway edged out Boldish by a tenth of a second and finished the race in 159th place with a time of 4 hours, 46 minutes and 9.4 seconds. Right behind them followed Shumway's 23-year-old sister Launa Millecam, who ran the race with them. After they crossed the finish line, Boldish knelt beside Shumway and embraced him, saying tearfully, "We did it! We did it!"
