| Description |
Model railways were under the spotlight on 11 September 1953. Railway travel had enjoyed some glory days in the early decades of the twentieth century. Railways Studios was established in 1920 and became New Zealand’s first outdoor advertising studio. By the 1950s the popularity of rail travel was declining with increasing numbers of people owning their own cars. Railways did well however with special excursions, such as trips to see the snow Tongariro and Arthurs Pass. Shown here is a model railway set up in the Railways Publicity Office in Wellington. It is not clear however what staff planned to do with it. Was this for some new advertising scheme of simply for their own enjoyment?
