Summary[edit]
DescriptionMonument to Ambrose Gorham - geograph.org.uk - 1092800.jpg |
English: Monument to Ambrose Gorham Gorham was a successful racehorse owner and bookmaker who moved to the village in 1893 to utilise the downland for the training of his racehorses, one of whom, Shannon Lass, won the Grand National in 1902. With the winnings gained Gorham, now local squire and lord of the manor, invested in dragging the village into the 20th century paying for mains water and electricity to be connected and building a local club in 1924 to provide a social facility for local stable lads (Though part of this altruism was directed at stopping them going to neighbouring village pubs to give away tips) which is now the village hall. Gorham died in 1933 and bequeathed the village and surrounding lands to Brighton corporation on condition that it retained its rural nature in perpetuity. The monument was erected by friends after his death and is in the graveyard of St Lawrence's church overlooking the Downs. |
