Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Plaque on the former pedestal of the monument to General José López-Pinto Berizo, converted in 2019 in a tribute to the victims of the explosion of the Artillery Park of Cartagena in 1874, during the Cantonal rebellion. It reads:

In memory of the more than 400 victims (mostly women, children and the elderly) caused by the explosion of the Artillery Park of Cartagena, on January 6, 1874.
"Let's say it first of all: if our citizens rose up in 1873 against the Government of Madrid, if they organized land and sea expeditions, if they suffered the work and deprivation of a prolonged siege, if they defended the city walls lively –heroically, sometimes–, and if they resisted the fires of a very hard shelling, they were not moved it by a localist patriotism, not by an eagerness for independence, but motivated by a political and social utopia that they considered valid for all Spaniards and whose advent they believed to approach with a stubborn resistance".
