Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built in 1912-1914, this Moorish Revival-style building was designed by Helfensteller, Hirsh and Watson to serve as the Moolah Temple of the Mystic Shrine, home to the St. Louis Shriners. The Shriners remained in the building until 1988, when they moved to a new facility in the suburbs near Creve Coeur. Following the departure of the Shriners, the building was renovated in 2004 and became a home to a movie theater, which operated until 2020, as well as apartments and a bowling alley. The building features a red brick exterior with terra cotta trim, decorative glazed tile inlays and details, Moorish motifs, blind Moorish and Roman arches, terra cotta columns, decorative Islamic motifs on the terra cotta cornice, a gabled parapet, a central entrance with three doorways inside a large arch with colorful trim and lettering above, Islamic-inspired geometric screens on some of the windows and transoms, a stone base, and polychromatic detailing. The building is a contributing structure in the Midtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
