Description
Deutsch: Die Höhle, die die Christen als Geburtsstätte Jesu ansehen, wurde ab dem 2. Jahrhundert verehrt. Kaiser Hadrian errichtete angeblich 135 ein Adonisheiligtum über ihr, wahrscheinlich auch, um damit die Jesusverehrung wieder zu unterbinden. Kaiser Konstantin der Große und seine Mutter Helena ließen an der Geburtsstätte eine Memorialkirche mit reichen Mosaikböden errichten, die sie noch vor 335 Jesus Christus weihten.
English: The Church of the Nativity, while remaining basically unchanged since the Justinian reconstruction, has seen numerous repairs and additions, especially from the Crusader period, such as two bell towers (now gone), wall mosaics and paintings (partially preserved).
