Description |
English: White paper with typed black ttext I would like the Great Seal of the Confederacy on two sides with data of beginning and ending of the war – suitable verse and fourteen (14) states (everyone) a handsome shaft of Georgia blue and grey granite. As of March 4, 1964, Mrs. Smith, President-General, wrote me “I wish that I could say that this design is exactly what I would have preferred. Had I not been President-General, I could have taken a definite stand and I would have been in a position to try to push the type of design which appeals to me.” I have only taken this stand as Chairman of two committees to express myself and push for the one I think suitable. Judge Beard writes there are seven (7) states and two (2) border states who have not sent in their quotas. I do not know why. I can only surmise – too many letters. You committee women got these quotas and I expect the Governors are waiting to hear from you. Too many cooks sometimes spoil the brother. Even I have not written letters. I felt it up to you. Too many letters I fear have caused confusion. I received a letter from a Centennial Commissioner from one state where my committee woman had gotten her quota. This letter states he had so many letters from different people he did not know what to do with the quota by U.D.C. Committee Women from his state. He was confused. I wrote him back to make check and mail to the Treasurer-General of the U.D.C. That was the instruction given me when I accepted chairmanship. Instead of doing this, the Centennial Commissioner made the check out to the Treasurer-General U.D.C. but gave it to the U.D.C. member of U.D.C. Committee representing his state. That state also got its quota of letters after the quota had been sent in. “I have notified the Treasurer-General to send invoices to each state and I do not know why seven states and two border states have not done so.” There is nothing I wanted more than erecting this monument under Mrs. Smith’s administration. We have $32,000. I am forced to believe that the writer of this scurrilous letter in the S.C.V. has been so busy writing confusing letters so he may on his retirement in August at his convention report his wonderful work of erecting a monument to the “Passing of the Army and Navy of the Confederate States of America”. It seems to me that Centennial Commissioners and those representing the states, who have given this money, should have been given the privilege of seeing this design before action was taken. So many are writing me their objections to the design. My forty-nine years of membership have been years of what I have considered
