White paper with typed black text

Mr. James Myers Supt. Gettysburg National Park Gettysburg, Virginia Dear Mr. Myers; The United Daughters of the Confederacy hope to place a monument in the park at Gettysburg in the near future honoring all Confederate soldiers and sailors and as a special memorial to Mr. Walter Washington Williams, the last of the Confederate soldiers who died in Texas. Mrs. Forrest E. Kibler of Atlanta, Ga. is serving as Chairman of the Committee to raise the funds and help with the selection of a design. As President General I am writing to you for any information which will be helpful to us. We are having a meeting of the UDC and the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Richmond on March 24th at which time we will attempt to select a design. What are the steps necessary for us to take to arrange for this monument? I would like to come to Gettysburg on March 19th and if possible meet with you and possibly discuss the location of this monument. The location will probably have some bearing on the design chosen. At the most we will have between $36,000 and $40,000 so this will be an important detail also. We will have approximately sixty-five or seventy members attending the meeting in Richmond and I wondered if we could have some of the brochures of the park to distribute at our meeting. I have one which was published in 1961. My plans are to drive to Gettysburg from Philadelphia on the 18th and if I could meet you early on the 19th, I would be most grateful, as I then will go on to North Carolina. Any suggestions which you might have will be appreciated. Very sincerely, Maynelle S. Smith Mrs. Robert Hamilton Smith President General
