White paper with typed black text

Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg Pennsylvania Dear Mr. Sollenberger: Mr. Myers is [sic] a letter of February 27, told me that you become Acting Superintendent of the Park on March 3. I had written to Mr. Myers in regard to a proposed monument which our Organization is planning to erect at Gettysburg honoring all Confederate Soldiers and Sailors and as a special tribute to Mr. Walter Washington Williams the last surviving soldier. On March 24th in Richmond we will have a meeting at which time we hope to make a selection of a design, on designs, which will then be submitted to you for approval. I would like very much to come to Gettysburg on March 19th and discuss the location and other details which will be helpful to us in making our selection. We expect to have approximately $36,000 to $40,000 for this project and would like to have a very impressive and dignified memorial and one that will do honor to those whom we wish to pay tribute. My plans are to drive to Gettysburg late March 18th and I could arrange tp [sic] see you fairly early on the 19th. Very sincerely, Maynelle S. Smith Mrs. Robert Hamilton Smith President General UDC
