English: Muddy River Usk bank The west bank of the River Usk in central Newport just south of, and seen from, Newport Bridge.
The lower reaches of the Usk are famous (or infamous depending on your point of view) for extensive mud banks, as in this view. The Usk, in common with other rivers flowing into the Bristol Channel, has an extreme tidal range in its lower reaches. The difference in the height of the river between low tide and high tide on occasion approaches 15 metres (nearly 50 feet). This constant raising and lowering of the river level maintains the mud. The Usk at Newport bridge is almost as likely to be flowing upstream as downstream. The river is tidal as far upstream as the bridge https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/735941 at Newbridge-on-Usk, 8km from Newport. The top of the market building is in the middle distance. |
