Multi-phase inclusions in a gem spinel

Summary[edit]

Description
English: In gemology, inclusions in gemstones are very important for the gemologist to be able to identity their nature (natural or synthetic), if they have been subjected to any treatment, and in some cases, their geographic origin. Inclusions in gemstones may also be at the origin of some amazing photomicrographs when they display cosmic shapes, stunning contrast or bright colors. To this end I study gemstones inclusions as well as take their pictures under a microscope in order to reveal and share their hidden inner beauty. This image shows an extremely complex multi-phase inclusion within a natural 0.38 carat pink spinel. It contains a huge trapped bubble swimming in a yellowish orange sulfur-rich fluid along with some opaque black crystals (sulfides) and transparent colorless crystals (carbonates). This main inclusion is surrounded by colorless crystals and numerous tiny cavities filled with two-phase inclusions. Technical Description : This photomicrograph was made with a natural 0.38 carat pink spinel seen through a gemological trinocular optical stereomicroscope (Motic GM 171-T) at magnification x110 with transmitted light, helped on the side by a powerful fiber optic illuminator (halogen). In order to get a satisfactory depth of field to highlight most details, this image, done with the DSLR Nikon D850, is the result of the stacking in Photoshop of 52 images taken along Z axis.
