Summary[edit]

Description Municipal Pier in Chicago (1916). Daniel Burnham had originally envisioned five large piers to service the city, but this was the only one ever built. Contrary to popular opinion, its original purpose had nothing to do with the Navy--it catered to shipping traffic and was designed to be an entertainment center. It earned its "Navy Pier" moniker after World War I, when it served as housing for navy members. During World War II, the Navy used the pier as a recruiting center, specifically for aircraft carriers. George H. W. Bush numbered among the pilots trained here. The University of Illinois operated a campus here briefly after the war for returning veterans, which was later moved a few miles west to become UIC. Its large warehouses made an ideal spot for conventions to meet until McCormick Place was built in 1960. USS Silversides, now moored at Muskegon, Michigan, attracted visitors for years. In 1989, the city invested heavily in its development as a tourist destination, and it is now the #1 visited site in Chicago.
