Português: Muralha do Funchal da Rua Major Reis Gomes e bombardeira da Rua dos Aranhas Muralhas com projeto de Mateus Fernandes (III) (c. 1520-1597) e construção de Jerónimo Jorge (c. 1570-1618), 1575 a 1615 (c.). A construção de uma cintura amuralhada no Funchal foi alvitrada nos finais do séc. XV, embora não tivesse tido sequência. A partir de 1492 também o reino de Castela se lançara na conquista do Oceano Atlântico e, embora com tecnologias ainda rudimentares, a ação apresentou-se como uma nítida concorrência ao expansionismo português e, no quadro das negociações do tratado de Tordesilhas, veio ordem para o Funchal, com data de 21 de junho de 1493, para a fortificação da já então florescente vila. A vereação assustou-se com o regimento enviado, onde toda a população deveria pagar a obra, conseguindo o protelar da mesma e, com a resolução do tratado, tudo ficou suspenso. |
