Place of discovery | Chapel of Santa Maria de Belém, former parish church of porto do Rastelo, west of Lisbon.
Object history | Near the beaches of Restelo, in a small chapel, this statue was dedicated to the cult of the Virgin protective of sailors and travellers. In the century of the great discoveries, Henry the Navigator built the convent of the Hieronymites in place of the chapel, and they adopted her as their patron saint.
