Summary[edit]

Description

On October 29 1991 the NZ Abel Tasman 1992 Commission was launched. The Commission organised projects to recall the 350th anniversary of Dutch explorer Abel Tasman’s visit to New Zealand. They included a book (Tasman’s legacy), a television programme and a memorial to Tasman in Christchurch. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands also visited and presented a statue of Tasman’s ships.

Pictured here is Governor-General Dame Catherine Tizard at the launch event for the Commission at Government House on October 29 1991. Also pictured are some Dutch Clog Dancers who participated at the launch event. Archives New Zealand holds the minutes, administration files and various photographs created by the 1992 Tasman Commission. These records can be seen in person in our Wellington Reading Room.
