Summary[edit]

Description
English: Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 8550 Main Street at Harris Hill Road, Clarence, New York, September 2020. Architect Joseph Fronczak brings to bear a staunchly classicist Georgian Revival design that hearkens back to what was more typically seen half a century or more before its 1965 completion: the façade of the building features columns and pilasters of the Ionic order supporting a broken pediment above the triple entrance, with balustrades flanking the base of the tower and round-arched windows decorated with ornamental keystones and voussoirs. Founded in 1954, Nativity is the newest of Clarence's three Catholic parishes, yet the parcel on which it sits had been used for religious purposes for over a century prior: it was the site of the Harris Hill United Brethren Church's parsonage beginning in the 1860s, and before that, of the so-called "Devil's Cave": a 150-foot-long cavern created by water leaching through the Onondaga limestone bedrock which was supposedly used to shelter runaway slaves as part of the Underground Railroad.
