Description
English: The Zechstein limestone "Abteröder Bär" ("Abterode Bear") was probably named after its distinctive shape, which is reminiscent of an upright bear. Its previous name was "Todstein" ("Stone of death"). They say that at this location has been a pre-Christian place of worship where they celebrated the end of winter and the beginning of spring in honour of "Mother Holle". Already in 1926 this limestone and its environment have been designated as botancial and natural history monument. This location is part of fauna flora habitat 4725-306 "Meißner und Meißner Vorland" within the geo and nature park "Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land", NE Hesse, Germany.
Deutsch: Der Zechsteinkalkfelsen "Abteröder Bär" verdankt seinen Namen wohl seiner markanten Gestalt, die an einen aufrecht stehenden Bären erinnert. Sein alter Name ist jedoch "Todstein". Hier soll eine vorchristliche Kultstätte gewesen sein, an der zu Ehren von Frau Holle das Ende des Winters und der Beginn des Frühjahrs gefeiert wurden. Bereits 1926 wurde der Todstein und seine Umgebung als pflanzenkundliches und erdgeschichtliches Naturdenkmal ausgewiesen. Der Bereich gehört zu dem Fauna-Flora-Habitat 4725-306 "Meißner und Meißner Vorland" im "Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land", Nordosthessen, Deutschland.
