The ''Jong'' that commonly travelled East Indies and South China Sea in 16th-century

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This work, engraved by Joan Doetecum for Van Linschoten's Itinerario, depicted a Jong (type of ancient sailing ship) that commonly travelled East Indies and South China Sea in 16th-century, and the sailors, of which one figure is engaged in fishing. The flag, featuring crescent moons and stars, suggested that this Jong comes from one of Islamic states in Java.[1][2]

The caption reads both in Latin and Dutch language, "Naves e China et Java velis ex arundine contextis et anchoris ligneis" and "Schepen van china et Iava met rietten seylen en houten anckers". Translated in English as "Ship of China and Java with rattan sails and wooden anchor".
