Mahabihar or Mahabuddha Mahabihar in the historical Ukuma located in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, ward No. 27 Also called Buddha Temple. The temple of the Buddha is located in Ukuma Bihar, a very wide square in Ukuma Bihar, a short distance from the very busy business center of Kathmandu, the Mahabuddha or Bir Hospital. About 1500 years ago, during the reign of Basantadeva, the grandson of Licchavi king Mandev, the most powerful ruler of the Abhir Gupta dynasty, Ravigupta, built the Maha Bihara or Mahabuddha Bihara in Ukuma Bihar from 512 to 532 AD. There is a very attractive Akshobhya Buddha statue. The body of this indestructible Buddha is 12 feet and the height including the asana is about 15 feet. A very attractive Buddha statue is enclosed in a glass fence. In the Buddha temple here, the inexhaustible Buddha statue is of red color. The color of the statue of the Inexhaustible Buddha should have been blue. But how it turned red is a matter of research, says Sangharatna Shakya, president of the Mahabuddha Mahabihar Guthi. It is considered to be the tallest Buddha statue in Nepal among the contemporary Buddha statues. Inside the temple, an attractive Buddha statue on the right and left of Pragya Parmita, Sariputra, Moogalyayan has also been installed. In the right hand corner of the Buddha temple, there are 4 inscriptions as well as statues of Manjushri and Shadakshari. In front of this Buddha temple is a mandapa with gold-plated bajra and various other small stupas. The main entrance of the temple is very attractive. It can be seen as an excellent example of wood carving. There are also other idols on the walls of various deities on the right and left of this chief. There is a belief that one should not go inside this Buddha temple except for daily worship. This temple is open to the public only on the day of Buddha Punirma. On other days, the door of the temple is closed in the morning by daily worship. According to the inscriptions there, it is mentioned in the inscription that a chaitya was built between the statue of Manjushri and Bahal on the wall of the temple during the restoration of Bahal in 964 A.D. This temple was earlier the roof of the common Zingati. The temple was repeatedly dilapidated due to various reasons. Reconstruction work of the temple of Mahabuddha Mahabihar was completed on the day of Sakimila Punirma on December 3, 2008 with various programs.
