Summary[edit]

Description
English: Fine example of Jacob Monk's highly detailed map of the United States, one of the most detailed wall maps of the period. The present example is virtually unique, being the only example of the map we have ever encountered to have been issued in case map format (dissected and laid on linen), rather than wall map format. Jacob Monk's maps of North America were perhaps the single most popular series of large fromat maps of North America published in the 1850s. First issued in 1852, the map was updated several times a year for most of the decade and the number of surviving examples pays testament to the fact that it was far and away the most commercially successful map of the United States published in the decade before the Civil War. Perhaps the most noteworthy feature of the map is the extraordinary treatement of the region between the Mississippi River and the the Rocky Mountains. The various Indian Territories are separately hand colored and identified with exacting detail, one of the few maps of the period which attempted to make this delineation and unquestionably the largest and most beautiful example. The mis-projected Texas, Pre-Gadsden purchase border with Mexico and coloration and detail in the California Gold Regions are also in evidence. The explorations of Pope and Nicollet are reflected in the newly formed Minnesota Territory and the Hydrographical Basin of the Mississippi River. While Monk's map is by no means rare on the market, this dissected and unvarnished example is an item of exceptional beauty and rarity. We have been unable to locate any other examples of the map in this format.
