Summary
[edit]DescriptionNewington Green from the southwest - geograph.org.uk - 1468564.jpg |
English: Newington Green from the southwest The Green has a long and interesting history: in the C16 Henry VIII frequented its dual attractions (hunting lodge at one end, concubines at the other), in the C17 it became a resort of dissenters and freethinkers, in the 1700s a non-conformist chapel was built and local residents included its renowned minister Rev. Richard Price, the literary lion Samuel Rogers and feminist pioneer Mary Wollstonecraft, in the next century the railway was built to the south. In WW2 an air raid shelter under the green was bombed and in the latter part of the C20 the area saw an influx of Turkish Cypriots. |
