Nicholas Bacon (1509-1579), Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, copy mid-17th century of portrait circa 1577/9 (when he was aged 68) holding his rod of office and the purse of the Great Seal, with royal arms of Queen Elizabeth I. Upper left the sitter's coat-of-arms and inscribed: MEDIOCRIA FIRMA: / SIR NICHOLAS BACON, and upper right: "15-9 (1579 ?) AET(ATIS) 68"; inscribed on frame, verso: Sir N. Bacon. Arms: Gules, on a chief argent two mullets pierced sable (Bacon) quartering Barry of six or and azure, a bend gules (Quaplade) overall a crescent for difference of a second son.
