Description |
English: The medaillon on the tombstone of Nikolay Gnedich: the marble replica created in 1961. The marble original of the medaillon (1835) is kept in the Annunciation Church of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (in the permanent exposition Signs of Memory on the first floor of the church).
Primarily the portrait of N. Gnedich was attributed to the sculptor Samuil Galberg (1787—1839). This version was based on a report in the Severnaya Pchela newspaper: “In April 1835 1,120 rubles for the monument [to N. Gnedich – Wikimedia Commons] were raised: 320 rubles were employed for the medaillon under the direction of Galberg and 800 rubles for the monument proper”. Later Elena Karpova, the curator of the sculpture collection of the State Russian Museum, advanced another version: the bas-relief was created by Anton Ivanov, a pupil of S. Galber. This attribution is founded on the publication Artist Departing for Overseas in Khudozhestvennaya Gazeta (1841) where the portrait of Gnedich is mentioned among works by Anton Ivanov, and also on the list of works by A. Ivanov in The Lexicon of Russian Artist by Nikolay Sobko (1851—1906). П. |
