Summary[edit]

Description Tonkin Gulf Incident, August 1964: Photograph taken from the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Maddox (DD-731) during her engagement with three North Vietnamese motor torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin, 2 August 1964. The view shows shells fired by Maddox splashing astern of one of the boats. The smoke at the left is perhaps from other shells and/or from another boat.
