Description
English: Northern Ireland Railways coach 2 (reg. OXI 522), a 1984 Leyland Tiger single-decker with Van Hool Alizée 53 seat bodywork, pictured in Wellington Place, Belfast. It was one of 5 such vehicles purchased second hand by NIR in 1989, from an original batch of 10 delivered new to Smiths Happiways of Wigan (who were being merged with Shearing that same year), registered in the series A160-9 MNE. The vehicles NIR purchased were A160/1/5/6/7 MNE. They were allocated Northern Irish registrations OXI 521-5 and given NIR fleet numbers 1 to 5, so A161 MNE became No.2, reg. OXI 522. Branded InterCity, they were used for rail replacement services. All 5 were sold to Ulsterbus in 1991, who renumbered them 591-5 in their fleet. After withdrawal by Ulsterbus in 2000, OXI 522 was re-imported to the UK, going on to find further work with several small operators in Kent/Sussex, still wearing its Northern Irish registration.
