Summary[edit]

Description
English: A whare in the left foreground, with a door at the left and a window at the right. There is a carved tekoteko figure on the ridgepole and the door and window surrounds are carved. At the right, a little further off, is a plainer house, also with a doorway and window on the front wall. A woman breastfeeds a baby in front of the house at left, and another child sits beside her.

The houses are based on Louis Auguste de Sainson's "Nelle Zélande. Cabane de la Baie Tolaga, Maison d'un Chef de la Baie des Iles, Maison du Chef Pomare, à la Baie des Iles" 1833, made after de Sainson visited New Zealand in 1827. The larger house is based on that of the chief Pomare in the Bay of Islands, and the smaller one on a house in Tolaga Bay.
