DescriptionNow that is what I call a milestone^ - geograph.org.uk - 962995.jpg |
English: Now that is what I call a milestone! It's amazing how many places you can get to from deepest south Shropshire. Here's the details:
Carmarthen 77, Brecon 64, Radnor 21, Presteign 16, Knighton 12, Clunn 8, Barmouth 69, Aberystwith 71, Newtown 25, Welshpool 25, Montgomery 16, Bishop's Castle 11, London 150, Oxford 91, Birmingham 52, Plymouth 205, Portsmouth 165, Exeter 162, Bath 97, Bristol 83, Gloucester 63, Worcester 39, Hereford 32, Ludlow 7.5, Edinburgh 298, Berwick 285, Newcastle 225, York 159, Manchester 91, Buxton 81, Liverpool 79, Chester 61, Holyhead 136, Oswestry 39, Salop 21, Stretton 7.5 Not all of them well-known Roman settlements, either, despite this magnificent milestone being right on the line of the old Watling Street. Maybe it's more recent than the Romans! (The few odd spellings, by the way, are as inscribed on the stone, so don't blame me if they don't match the modern town names.)
