Summary[edit]

Description
English: Old Carreras Building, Hampstead Road The former Arcadia Works of the House of Carreras, a tobacco company founded in the early 1850s by a Spaniard, Don José Carreras Ferrer, whose first premises were in Leicester Square. The company expanded rapidly after introducing the brand 'Craven A', the first machine-made, cork-tipped cigarettes, in 1921 and moved to these new art-deco premises, built in 1926 and opened in 1928. In the years following Howard Carter's discovery of the tomb of the boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun in 1923, 'Tutmania' gripped the imagination of some Western architects and Egyptian-style motifs became fashionable. The building was the first in Britain to use pre-stressed concrete and the first to incorporate air-conditioning. The tobacco company quit the premises following a merger with Rothmans in 1959. In 1961, the building was converted into offices and underwent a major restoration in the late 1990s. It is now known as Greater London House.
