Title
English: Old and new West Spokane Street bridges, Seattle, circa 1925
Description
English:

From 1902 to 1917, three temporary wooden bridges were built over the west water way of the Duwamish River, connecting Harbor Island to West Seattle (annexed in 1907).

This east-facing view shows one of the old wooden bridges (right) next to the permanent steel bridge (left) under construction. A lone car crosses the new bridge, a low-level bascule bridge, officially known as West Spokane Street Bridge No. 1 (North), which opened on November 27, 1924, Thanksgiving Day, and was in use until 1978. Oregon Boiler Works, visible a the center left edge of the frame, was located at 3493 Klickitat Avenue on Harbor Island.

Photographer James P. Lee (1894-1963) worked for the City of Seattle's Engineering Department from 1922-1957.
