Summary[edit]

Description
English: Stock certificate of the American Bank Note Company for 75 shares, issued to Tracy R. Edson (1809-1881) on February 13, 1863 in New York and with his handwritten signature as president. Edson was a co-founder of the company and its president from 1858 to 1875. He made a large part of his personal fortune from royalties on the patent rights he acquired for a permanent green ink used to print U.S. currency. Shortly after the founding of the Gold and Stock Telegraph Company (later a subsidiary of Western Union) in 1867, Edson became one of its principal stockholders. In 1869 he was elected a director and served as a member of the executive committee thereafter.
