Summary[edit]

Description

The Onepoto redoubt, Te Upoko-o-Te Ao, was built of stone with earth sods (as shown on the lower left of the image). Constructed in 1871 as part of the campaign against Te Kooti, the redoubt was manned by Armed Constabulary troops until 1877. It guarded the 'frontier' into Te Urewera from the East Coast, and a government boat also patrolled the lake. It was scaled back to a police base from 1878.

The photograph itself comes from a fragile album of New Zealand War memorials, graves and sites. It was created by the War Graves Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, and includes images from across the country.
