Summary[edit]

Description
English: During the night between Tuesday 22 March and Wednesday 23 March, a forest fire started spreading on a mountain area near Belluno and Treviso in Veneto in Northern Italy. The wildfire has considerably spread despite the firefighters’ efforts, and the use of water bombers. In fact, the drought that has been affecting Northern Italy for the past months is likely to have contributed to the rapid spreading of the fire and has affected the water bombers’ operations, as low water levels in the nearby Piave river did not allow to use it for water resupply, forcing the aircraft to replenish at the further away Santa Croce lake. This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 24 March 2022, shows the resulting engulfing the area and severely affecting the local air quality.
