Français : Le fort de Santa Cruz est un magnifique colosse de pierre s'élèvant au sommet de la montagne de l'Aïdour, à l'ouest d'Oran et dominant, du fait de sa position en hauteur, la ville d'El Bahia.
Le fort se trouve à 429 mètres d'altitude et fait face à une église catholique, situé un peu en contrebas : la chapelle de Santa Cruz, qui est gérée par le diocèse d'Oran. Le fort de Santa Cruz a été érigé dans la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle par les Espagnols qui tentaient de s'opposer aux Ottomans. Ceux-ci, qui avaient envahi et fait tomber l'Empire byzantin en 1453, s'étaient rendus maîtres d'un vaste Empire qu'ils ont étendu sur tout le Moyen-Orient, dans la Corne de l'Afrique et en Afrique du Nord. Les Espagnols voyaient d'un mauvais oeil l'extension de cet Empire et, appuyés par les Maures et les tribus arabes, ils ont fait construire ce fort afin de résister aux Turcs. Le fort avait été amélioré une première fois en 1509, à partir d'une construction plus ancienne. Situé sur la montagne de l'Aïdour, il bénéficiait d'une position idéale pour défendre la ville. Détruit et reconstruit à maintes reprises, ce n'est pas dans les configurations de la fin du XVIe siècle qu'il se présente aujourd'hui. Lors de la colonisation française il a été restauré entièrement entre 1854 et 1860 par le Génie Militaire Français. Le fort logeait le gouverneur espagnol d'Oran ainsi que sa garnison militaire. Le gouverneur y disposait de grands appartements et de trois citernes d'eau de pluie, afin de pouvoir résister en cas de siège. Aujourd'hui, le fort est en bon état. Cela a permis à la municipalité de le mettre en valeur pour faire découvrir aux visiteurs cette histoire peu connue de l'Algérie. |
