English: The Maxims II manuscript has a phrase that inspired Tolkien, Orthanc enta geweorc, on its second handwritten line. It originally meant "cunning work of giants"; Tolkien chose to read it differently, creating a tower named Orthanc and tree-giants called Ents. |
