Title
Ostensibly President Hayes addressing Seattle crowd at Occidental Hotel, but probably Seattle's memorial for President Garfield, 1881
Description

Transcribed from postcard: "President Hayes addressing Seattle's entire population in 1881 where Hotel Seattle now stands." Duplicate photo spl_shp_7292 identifies this gathering as President Garfield's memorial service in 1878. Duplicate photographs in the University of Washington's collection have both descriptions.

Despite what is written on the postcard (which dates from some 30 years after the fact), this is almost certainly the memorial for Garfield in 1881, not Hayes's visit (which was in 1878). Given that this claims to be Hayes's visit, but is dated 1881, the creator of the postcard (Frasch?) obviously had something wrong. The buntings for both events seem to match but note in particular the building to the right of the hotel. That is missing in (for example) File:Crowd in Occidental Square in front of Occidental Hotel for the visit of President Hayes, Seattle, 1878 (CURTIS 319).jpeg, and was presumably built during the roughly three years between the events.
