While photographing flower flies (Palpada albifrons), a Southern yellowjacket (Vespula squamosa) attacked one and dragged it to the ground where I was kneeling. Almost immediately, others arrived, fighting over the fly like piranhas. Most paper wasps hunt solo, taking prey back to their nest where a sister may help divide it to feed the young. In this instance, a dozen frenzied yellowjackets fought over one little fly. Music was added for melodrama but the buzzing is real, coming from reinforcements flying past my head. I backed up at the end to show the activity over the scene. You may want to pause and let the video buffer before viewing.
