Summary[edit]
DescriptionOwego Elks Lodge - fmr Latham A. Burrows House - Owego, New York - 20220206.jpg |
English: The Owego Elks Lodge, 223 Front Street at Church Street, Owego, New York, February 2022. The work of an unknown designer who was undoubtedly influenced by, and who may indeed be, architect and pattern-book author Asher Benjamin, the building initially served as the residence of Latham A. Burrows, and despite a number of nonhistoric rear additions built after the Elks acquired the property in the 1920s, remains among the most exquisite examples of the abundant 19th-century residential architecture to be found in the Owego Central Historic District. The High Greek Revival style favored by the possible architect is well exemplified here by the low-pitched hipped roof with block modillions undergirding the eaves, the façadal symmetry, and the large windows topped with decorative paneled lintels. Also typical of the aesthetic is the building's predominant feature - namely the monumental, tetrastyle Ionic portico - though it's a later addition, dating to the late 19th century, around the same time the porch at left was built. One of the most elegant homes in town, it has over the years been the residence of a succession of prominent Owegoans, the first and most prominent of whom was Latham Avery Burrows (1792-1855) a merchant-turned-jurist and politician who served at various times as judge in the Tioga county court system, Owego village president, and New York State senator. He lived in the house from its completion in 1831 until moving to Buffalo around 1842, where he would go on to serve in the city government as alderman and as the Collector of Tolls for the Erie Canal. |
