| Description | Pöllau is a small town located in Eastern Styria about 55 km northeast of Graz. It is the center of the nature park "Pöllauer Tal". Many old houses characterize the historic townscape. Pöllau was first mentioned in a document from the year 1163. The name means "field, broad valley". Located at the junction of two trade routes Pöllau soon developed into an important craft and trading place. The Pöllau Abbey was founded in 1504. A phase of rebuilding and reconstruction of the monastery was completed in 1779 with the construction of the high altar in the new church. The dome of this important baroque church can be seen in the middle of the picture. |
