This is one of the oil sketches Skovgaard did, for the 1844 Neuhausen art competiton. The motive - spring flooding - was apparently unfavorably received, so the painting for the competition was never made. Source: Marianne Saabye (ed.), Dansk Kunst i 100 år, page 90.
