| Description |
This ‘Fresco’ is a bit of a mystery. It is generally reported as being a Polish built PZL-Mielec Lim-6bis, with the c/n 1F-0327 and the Polish Air Force serial ‘327’. This was originally built as a Lim-5M and later converted to a Lim-6bis, BUT, a Lim-6bis would have inner pylons near to the fuselage and although these would be easy to remove it should also have a brake-shute container at the base of the rudder, which is also missing and harder to modify. So, while logically ‘0327’ would fit with a known serial and c/n, it doesn’t fit with the airframe. That leaves the option of this either being a straight Polish Lim-5 of unknown ID, or (less likely) a genuine MiG-17F from somewhere else, also unknown! Whatever the heritage, it is on display in Vietnam People’s Air Force (NVAF) markings on the deck of USS Intrepid, part of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Pier 86, New York Harbor, NY. 6th March 2016 |
