Original description: Silky white palygorskite on calcareous dolostone from Virginia. Also known as "mountain leather" and attapulgite (after Attapulgus, Georgia). Child close-up photo.
Palygorskite is a key component in the pigment "Maya Blue" used in Mayan ceramics, painting, and textiles. Sources of palygorskite have recently been found in Yucatan Peninsula sinkholes. Currently used in many manufacturing processes, and as an anti-diarrheal.
