English: Orchids are synonymous with Singapore. Our national flower Papilionanthe (Vanda) Miss Joaquim ‘Agnes’ is, in fact, one of the oldest and most famous orchid hybrids in the world. Since its introduction in 1893, the cultivation and hybridisation of orchids has become part of a celebration of our nation’s intangible cultural heritage. Papilionanthe (Vanda) Miss Joaquim ‘Agnes’ is truly a living heritage that has prevailed from over a century ago to the modern Singapore today. Our local orchid farms producing these resources are becoming a rare and endangered trade in Singapore today, that will fade to memories and books or murals for our posterity, if not properly preserved. |
