Summary[edit]
DescriptionParacelsus 1567.jpg |
English: The "Rosicrucian" portrait of Paracelsus (1567), a modification of the 1540 Hirschvogel portrait.
Literature: Walter Pagel, Paracelsus: An Introduction to Philosophical Medicine in the Era of the Renaissance, Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers (1982), p. 235. The image was published in the "Paracelsianist" work Philosophiae magnae Paracelsi (Heirs of Arnold Birckmann , Cologne 1567). The artist is possibly Frans Hogenberg, acting under the directions of Theodor Birckmann (1531/33–1586). This is the first image in which Paracelsus' sword has the word Azoth inscribed on the pommel, and the first to show his attributed coat of arms. Shown in the background are Rosicrucian symbols, including the head of a child protruding from the ground symbolising rebirth.
